Biography: Prof. Simon C. Moss is M. D. Anderson Professor of Physics at the University of Houston. He received his B.S. and M.S. in Metallurgy from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1956 and 1959, respectively, and his Sc.D. in Metallurgy and Materials Science from M.I.T. in 1962.

Moss' current research includes X-ray and neutron scattering studies of phase transitions and disordered and defective solids, structure and modelling of liquids and amorphous solids, nanocrystalline solids, modulated solids, structure of quasicrystals, structure and defects in high Tc superconductors, thin films, and structure and phase transitions in C60 crystals.

Moss' honors and awards include a Ford Foundation Postdoctoral Fellowship in Engineering, M.I.T. (1962-1964); a John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowship (1968-1969); the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation Senior Scientist Award (1978-1979); the DOE Award for Outstanding Scientific Accomplishment (with Lawrence Livermore and Brookhaven Labs, 1988); the UH Research Excellence Award (1990); the M. D. Anderson Chair of Physics at UH (1991); the David Adler Lectureship Award, Division of Materials Physics, American Physical Society (1993); the Max Planck Research Award, Max Planck Gesellschaft/Alexander von Humboldt Foundation (1994-96), shared with Prof. J. S. Peisl, University of Munich; and the UH Esther Farfel Award (1994).
